In this second lecture I will deal in more detail with the different phases of an information visualization project. Knowing these different phases allows one to tackle a project of this kind in a more disciplined way. The problem today with information visualization is indeed that no design guidelines exist yet about how to face an IV project.
So, I will review the main phases of the project and the main aspects that have to be dealt with to come up with an effective and successful information visualization tool.
The first part of a visualization tool deals with selection. We have already discussed selection, the selection problem consists of taking - among the data which are available in the original dataset - only that data that are relevant to the task currently considered by the user, because if you are able to eliminate, to filter out some data, it will become much easier to display the relevant data.
