Another important goal is that IV aims at making the user an active part in the recognition of patterns: if the visualization is well designed the user can notice some pattern in the data, which could not have occurred by chance. And in this sense IV is complementary to the automatic work done by algorithms in data-mining or pattern recognition. By combining the visual recognition capability of humans with automatic capability recognition of data-mining and pattern recognition, human operators could detect what would pass unnoticed through automatic detection systems, improving the performance of the overall human-machine combination.
