In this lecture
I wish to give you a brief summary of the evolution of mobile cellular telecommunications
and follow it by a brief summary on speech coding techniques used for cellular
mobile communications. You know that the cellular mobile communication has moved from analog to the digital and from telephony to multimedia. In the beginning, about thirty years back, it was in the form of analog telephones that was the first system known as amps advanced mobile phone systems, developed by the bell labs in the United States of America. Improvements were brought in and we had the digital telephone service which also allowed low speed data. Subsequently the data rates were enhanced and we had digital telecommunications, mobile digital telecommunications. The speed of data could be further enhanced and we had the telephony and high speed data. Finally, in the very near future we are going to have what is known as wireless multimedia, the third generation of mobile communications. And not in very long future we shall have the broadband wireless based on perhaps the ATM/IP. | ![]() |
