Speech quality is affected by delay, jitter, and packet loss. The delay causes echo, particularly if delay is more than 50 msec. Voice over IP networks must implement echo cancellation. There will be talker overlap if the delay is more than 250 msec. This causes problems in the normal conversation. The person at the other end does not understand the silence of the other person (due to delay) and starts taking resulting in talker overlap.
