The architecture of voice over IP system is shown in figure. PSTN can be connected to the Internet using the VoIP gateways. The existing PBX's can also be connected to provide voice communication to the legacy systems.

mainly supports data services. The web started providing the multi-media
content, but this is only one way. Voice requires two way communications
and hence special protocols are required in this case. The objective is
to use a multi-media PC running special software to be used for voice communication
