One standard that has been developed is the Universal Serial Bus (USB), a standard proposed by Compaq, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, NEC and Northern Telecom. It can handle up to 127 devices from one port, auto detection and configuration of peripherals without shutting down or rebooting the PC. A maximum data rate of 12 MBPS for low throughput devices is supported.
