In spite of the important paradigm shifts as mentioned above, there are still major issues which need to be tackled.

  • The computers are significant, now we need to make them insignificant. Today, we consider computers as entities which attain significance more from a psychological point of view. But the computers need to make our jobs easy and they should not have any 'significance', they are just tools.
  • Computers are difficult to use, let us make them easy to use. For example, today, every PC user is an administrator. If we have to add a peripheral, we need to make configuration changes, load new software etc. which makes things very difficult. We need to make the computers very easy to use so that even novices can carry out their work easily.
  • Computers are slow, let us make them fast: Though there is lot of development, still the computers are slow in processing signals such as audio and video signals. If we want high fidelity audio and high resolution video for applications such as text to speech conversion, speech recognition, desk top video conferencing etc., the computers are very slow.
  • Computers are dumb, let us make them intelligent. In spite of the research in Artificial intelligence, the computers still do not have any intelligence. Only when mathematical models are developed for human brain and human behaviour, we can make the computers intelligent. Today, the computers are less intelligent than a two-year-old baby is.
