If we look at the evolution of computational machines in conjunction with computational methods, the first mechanical calculator was that of William Schickhard developed in 1623, which set the era of mechanical calculators. Then, Blaise Pascal developed the mechanical counter in 1642.
The foundation for automated machines was laid in 1823 by Charles Babbage and through him the computer era started. However, Babbage could not recognise the full working system and the analytical engine remained a concept. Many others have attempted to develop such machines in later years. Computational automation took off in late 1800s by Hollerith who developed an electro-mechanical machine. The current IBM Corporation machines use the same architecture. There have been efforts to manufacture and develop computing devices using mechanical devices.
