The shown procedure is not the only way to make diagnostics. We can make qualitative diagnostics, which requires sophisticated signal analysis and identification techniques, but does not require any model of the mechanical system. We do not need to use a model of the system in this kind of diagnostics. However it is only possible to determine the type of the malfunction but not its position nor its amount and phase.
