To optimise a suburban train we have tried to minimise these two ratios: W is the weight of the vehicle when it is fully loaded and p is the weight of passengers with luggage. So, if I maximise p over W I get a vehicle which carries the highest payload and which is as light as possible. Also if I maximise this ratio I get a vehicle which has the highest payload and is as short as possible.
